Hunt for local film talent

BUDDING film makers in south Northants are leading the way in the build up to the counties biggest film competition

Now it in its fourth year Film Northants is a chance of film enthusiasts have their work shown on a big screen in Northampton and abroad, and win hundreds of pounds worth of vouchers, cinema passes and exclusive movie merchandise.

Launched last month the 2011 competition has already attracted 13 entries, including some from Towcester, Blisworth, Silverstone and Tiffield.

The 2009 winning movie was a haunting treasure hunt called, No Stone Unturned, and was filmed in Northampton, Everdon and Towcester by brothers Anthony and Matthew Dumont from Towcester.

Matthew Dumont said a professional approach and simple equipment can produce some surprising results.

He said: “Obviously the quality of the equipment helps, but we did it on a really low budget. We a had a camcorder off Ebay for £70.

“But after we won we did get a bit of interest. A company in Northampton asked us to do a video for them, so we did get some paid work directly from the competition. But what attracted us to it was the chance to have our film screened in a cinema, it’s one of those things not many people get to do.”

New for this year and thanks to a partnership with Favourites Film Festival Berlin this year’s winners will have their film screened to a European audience.

And due to the number of young people entering the competition this year it will include a youth category for the first time.

Film Northants chairman Lily Canter said: “Over the past four years we have developed a networked of partnerships with youth forums, youth clubs, study centres and schools across the county so we are confident that we will receive a really strong selection of the films from young people this year. There are so many talented and creative youngsters in the county that we want to give them the recognition they deserve.”

Entries to the competition must be no longer than five minutes long and must be filmed with the county over the last year.

The deadline for entries is Thursday, August 14 and all of those shortlisted will be screened at the Cineworld in Northampton on Monday, September 19.
